Job Duties:

The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is responsible for prosecuting those charged with violating the criminal laws of Virginia in Virginia Beach. We are seeking a legal assistant to perform work of a technical and frequently confidential nature in the office of the Commonwealth's Attorney.


Duties can include:  initial case preparation to include requesting and organizing case files and reports, creating and updating witness list, adding case parties and other relevant information into the Case Management System; creating subpoenas, transportation orders, travel requests, witness court date letters, closing letters and other similar documents; updating court dockets to reflect court actions and perform necessary follow up; preparing basic legal documents and correspondence; acting as a liaison with witnesses and government agencies (e.g., Police Department, Sheriff's Department, Probation & Parole, Clerk's Offices, Secretary of the Commonwealth and Attorney General); performing other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and office needs.
 

To be a successful candidate in this position, you must have a general knowledge of legal terminology, be able to manage multiple tasks, organize detailed information, and understand and follow instructions.  We desire a candidate who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, works well under pressure and meets deadlines.  The candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team.  Lastly, the selected candidate should be able to sit and operate a computer terminal for up to 6 hours each day.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires a HS/GED and any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to three (3) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities and associated with such positions as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal. May be required to possess a Paralegal/Legal Assistant Certificate.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferences:

Professional experience working in the criminal law and/or criminal justice field; Prior professional experience as a legal assistant or paralegal; Experience working with state and local law enforcement organizations; Experience working with or in the VA state court system; Professional experience working in a Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office; Experience using and updating case management systems; Experience in clerical and/or legal work.

VRS Contribution:   All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
