The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia is seeking applications to fill one Legal Assistant vacancy in the Civil Division. If selected for this position, you will serve as a senior Legal Assistant responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services related to complex immigration cases with the United States Attorney's Office, Middle District of Georgia.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides substantive assistance to AUSAs in complex litigative matters related to immigration cases and prosecutions such as habeas cases, mandamus cases, illegal entry cases, harboring and smuggling investigations, human trafficking, cases involving immigration practitioners who commit application fraud and other similar matters;
  • Acts as a legal assistant subject matter expert and provides training, guidance and technical assistance to other legal support staff;
  • Assists in conducting factual research on individuals and companies using computerized databases and other sources;
  • Examines, prepares and processes a variety of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, exhibits, subpoenas, etc.;
  • Provides assistance to attorneys in court preparation and exhibits;
  • Maintains calendar(s) of assigned attorney(s), tracks filings, hearings, and trial dates, schedules appointments, conferences and interviews. Provides reminders of commitments and court appearances;
  • Arranges travel including but not limited to, scheduling flights, hotel reservations, and rental car;
  • Produces a variety of written legal documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications;
  • Provides automation litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. GS-08: To be eligible at the GS-08 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS0-7 level.

Specialized Experience:Specialized experience is defined as experience providing assistance to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, answers, exhibits, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using automated software to produce legal related reports and documents, including developing tables of contents and indices to briefs.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
